The evidence base — with its limitations stated.
We present our research honestly, in three tiers of strength, so a diligence reader can weight each study by its design. We do not overclaim.
How to read this. E4L is a general-wellness company. Our products support energy, resilience and wellbeing; they are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Evidence strength varies widely across the studies below. For each, we state the tier, sample size and design, and we add a "no causal claim" caveat for observational and pilot work. Nothing here should be read as proof of clinical efficacy beyond what a study's design supports.
The three tiers
Tier 1 — Peer-reviewed, published
The credibility spine. A peer-reviewed study conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), published in EXPLORE (2025).
- Ranaweera et al., EXPLORE (2025) — "Protective effect of energized structured water on bioenergetic function and oxidative stress in H9c2 cells." Infoceuticals (as energized structured water) increased mitochondrial maximal and spare respiratory capacity and glycolytic ATP, produced ~37% less oxidative stress (reduced reactive oxygen species) with protection against an oxidative challenge, and altered expression of 1,139 genes (717 up, 422 down). Cellular study.
This is the study to weight most heavily. The EXPLORE paper is a cell-culture study, not a human clinical trial; its findings describe cellular mechanisms, not treatment outcomes in people. DOI: 10.1016/j.explore.2025.103232
Tier 2 — Human studies (internal / mixed publication)
Human data, ranging from a strong double-blind design to small observational pilots.
- GEM Pilot (2025), N=20, 60-day observational, no control. Self-reported anxiety/stress and fatigue scores improved, alongside changes in mitochondrial membrane potential. The authors themselves stress: this is a pilot with no control group — no causal claim can be drawn. Methods: anxiety/stress measured with the GAD-7 self-report scale (~39% improvement, p=0.007); membrane-potential change p=0.020.
- Holos University double-blind study, N=54, 6-month, placebo-controlled. The strongest design in the human set; reported reductions in depression and self-reported stress.
- Large internal wellness cohort (~6,000 with 2+ visits). Statistically significant self-reported improvement in energy, pain, sleep and stress — largest where initial scores were low. The biggest-N evidence we have, but internal and uncontrolled.
Observational and internal studies cannot establish causation and are subject to selection and placebo effects. We report them as supportive signal, not proof. Exact definitions and full methods are in the underlying papers included in this data room.
Tier 3 — Cellular / mechanistic (internal lab work)
Bench studies exploring how the signals act on cells — largely white papers and lab reports.
- Cell Driver: increased membrane fluidity and mitochondrial content, reduced reactive oxygen species in HDF cells.
- Skin Driver (ED10): +49% wound closure vs control at 24h (scratch assay); +28% collagen-1 production at 72h.
- ED3 imprinting: improved mitochondrial spare respiratory capacity and glycolytic ATP; reduced ROS under stress; no cytotoxicity.
Mechanistic cell studies, mostly unpublished. They describe biological effects in cell culture and do not by themselves demonstrate benefit in people. Distinct from the published EXPLORE paper above — do not conflate.
The mechanistic throughline
The tiers connect: bench work (Tier 3) shows bioinformational signals changing mitochondrial function, membrane biophysics and gene expression; the peer-reviewed EXPLORE paper (Tier 1) confirms this for energized structured water in heart cells; and the human GEM pilot (Tier 2) shows changes in wellbeing measures alongside mitochondrial remodeling in people. That cell → published → human arc is the credibility spine of the energy-first thesis.
Where the science lives in the product

Beyond the studies
- Patents. E4L's core pulse-encoding technology is protected by a granted UK patent (2024), with a corresponding US patent application filed in 2022.
- Books. Founder Harry Massey is author or co-author of four books on bioenergetics, including Decoding the Human Body-Field (with Peter Fraser, Inner Traditions, 2008), The Unturned Stone (2006), Energy for Life, and Restore Your Energy with Bioenergetics (2022).
- Data. An acquired dataset of 1M+ scans built over 26 years underpins the FIELD platform.
- Regulatory track record. Across 20+ years of commercial history, the acquired products have passed three FDA inspections with no issues — including an in-person infoceuticals inspection and repeated, stricter customs/FDA import reviews. The miHealth handheld is in the final stages of FDA over-the-counter clearance for pain relief (a regulatory milestone in progress, not a treatment claim); BWS has never been questioned; and the GEM sits in a performance/wellness classification. The products make structure/function and wellbeing claims only, so regulatory exposure is minimal.
